This poster is my mash-up of Dolly Parton, the Queen of Country, with the rebellious energy of the 1970s British punk scene. Visually, I’m borrowing from Jamie Reid’s iconic “God Save the Queen” artwork for the Sex Pistols, with its cut-and-paste ransom lettering and defaced royal portrait that challenged the idea of the British monarchy during Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver Jubilee.
Instead of attacking a crown, I’m crowning Dolly. I keep the gritty, DIY punk language—high-contrast portrait, rough halftones, and loud, chopped-up type—but flip the message into a celebration of a Southern woman who broke her own set of rules in country music. The background is built from a collage of Dolly song titles, turning her discography into a noisy, handwritten wall of text behind her. The layered “QUEEN” blocks across her face echo classic punk posters while claiming her status as the reigning Queen of Country.
